A wide range of activities and groups at St Marks - something for everyone

Our first year in Lighthouse has been very busy - meeting once a week to explore bible teaching through crafts, drama and music. Our numbers have increased too, and it has been lovely to see friendships growing. Over the past year, we have also enjoyed some special events – BBQ, Beetle Drive and a Christmas party. Last April, St Mark’s hosted a joint service for people with learning disabilities and friends. Some of the group have gone to ‘away days’ – meeting with other similar groups from this area. It’s good to see people with learning disabilities attending most services at St Mark’s - may we continue to be a safe and welcoming church for all! |

The Lunch Club meets every month after Thursday's Holy Communion Service... We approach the tenth year of serving lunches to the over 60’s each month which are so much appreciated by our elderly parishioners,( many of whom are sprightly octogenarians and over and include one lady who is 100 years old) for the excellent food and fellowship. The donation of £500 from PCC to underwrite our efforts is greatly appreciated. We are desperately seeking cooks, male or female, as we have lost three wonderful ladies over the year due to age, illness and family commitment. This could be your contribution to HOPE ’08 by working with a friendly and happy team one day each month and bringing such joy. |

Alpha courses are organised regularly as a way of sharing our faith....
The Alpha Course ran for 10 weeks starting at the end of October and finishing just before Lent at the end of January. Each week 17 guests and 6 leaders met to enjoy a fantastic meal in the Narthex followed by a talk in the church. This was followed by small group discussions covering the Alpha topics such as “Who is Jesus”, “Why and how should I read the Bible?” and “How does God guide us?”. The group also enjoyed a full day away in Ripon with three sessions focussed on the Holy Spirit. The guests all found the course to be a relaxed enjoyable experience and many have joined a follow up group to continue their fellowship and learning together. The course could not happen without the very considerable contribution from so many members of St Marks. The meals provided by the catering team are fantastic and their skills and dedication to the course are really appreciated by all. It was also great to see so many members of the St Marks House Groups helping each week with the washing up and clearing away. Finally the clergy and leadership team ensured that the topics were presented with enthusiasm and clarity each week. Our new Alpha course begins on 12th January with an Alpha supper and the first week begins on Jan 19th. |

We are currently looking at how St. Mark's can implement the newly formulated Diocesen Environment Policy. We will be carrying out an audit of current practice and looking for ideas for improvement. We have recently had an independent energy consultant conduct an energy audit for the church. Walk to Church Sunday is planned to coincide with World Environment Sunday, June 8th 2008. The church mowing team are trying out a new mowing regime at the back of church to see if we can develop a hay meadow area for wildlife. |
